Wilderness fishing

Wilderness Outfitters has been guiding fly-fishing guests into the Bob Marshall Wilderness for 20 years. Rick has found the best rivers and tributary streams away from the crowds. Fishing in the Bob Marshall Wilderness is a special experience. You'll have little or no competition and beautiful scenery is awaiting you at every turn.

Fish for native Cutthroat Trout in the Bob Marshall Wilderness

We operate a horse packing outfit that allows us to access the great fly-fishing in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Our trips are usually 5 to 10 days in length. On the West side of the divide destinations include the South Fork of the Flathead River including its headwater streams. We set up a camp on the main river and then are able to walk to the great stretches of water near camp or you can ask one of our guides to accompany you to the nearby headwater streams such as Young's Creek or Gordon Creek. If you choose the East side we fish the South Fork and the North Fork of the Sun River.

9-day South Fork of the Flathead trip

This year, 2020, we have a 9-day trip that departs on July 27th and returns on August 4th. We will spend 2 days riding in and enjoying the spectacular scenery and arrive on the river on the afternoon of day two. I have a special campsite there in a beautiful meadow. This camp is strategically located along the best of the South Fork. From there we can fish by simply walking a few yards to the river or pack a lunch and walk up or downstream to try the ever changing character of the river.

We will have wranglers available to saddle a horse and accompany you to the fantastic fishing on the nearby headwater streams.

Wranglers are also available to ride or hike with the non-fishing guests so bring the family. The area has a very interesting back country Forest Service village served only by horseback or hikers. A visit to the facility is like stepping back in time with hand-built log buildings and hitching rails rather than parking lots!

Custom designed trips

If an existing trip does not suit you, I enjoy talking with my guests to put together a trip that takes in the area and activities you want and the time you desire. Open time in 2020 includes late June, early July and most of August.

What to expect

We will provide you with a experienced horse trained to work in the mountains. At the beginning of the trip the crew will fit you to a saddle and demonstrate how to control your horse. The outfitter, Rick Adkins, will ride with you on travel days to ensure your enjoyment and safety. When we arrive in camp the crew will unload the mules and set up a comfortable camp with chairs, tables, tents, cots, and a complete kitchen. We serve a hearty breakfast with plenty of coffee. After breakfast we set out meats, cheeses, bread, condiments, fruit and other snacks so you can make what you want for the day. Dinners include chicken breasts, pork chops, a spaghetti night, and steaks.

We provide free transportation from Missoula to the trailhead.

Trips of 7 days or longer are $325 per day per person. Trips of 6 days or less are $350 per day per person.

A $700 deposit is required at the time of booking.

We offer a 20% discount for youths 14 or younger.

Private trips are available at the above pricing for 6 or more guests.
